VERBENA DEL CENTENARIO

Tuesday the 13th is a day of bad luck. According to the biblical book of Revelation, 666 is the number of the devil. The hieroglyph of the number 4,233 could be interpreted as a young pharaoh being killed. The numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 are one of the recurring and most important themes of the Lost TV series. With 1 and 4 I draw the face of your portrait ...

Numbers have hidden potential, meaning, continuous interpretations and reinterpretations. For us, 19 is the way to relate 1919 and 2019, the years of inauguration and commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Communications palace in Madrid, now the building of the City Council.

For the verbena of its 100th birthday, ENORME Studio we have designed all the scenery of the party around tens of 19 that dot the space in different axonometric perspectives ... Rain of 19, totems of 19, tablecloths with kamasutras of 1 and 9 ... 1 and 9 also have a symbolic component in relation to the identity of Madrid, since 91 is the telephone prefix of the city ...

In 1987 the remains of "Aragosaurus ischiaticus" were dug up and catalogued by a group of researchers consisting of Sanz, Buscalioni, Casanovas and Santafé at the town of Galve, in the province of Teruel. It was the first dinosaur to be found at the Iberian Peninsula.
Teruel's underground, turned into a tourist appeal by thematic parks such as Dinópolis, is full of discoveries that remind us the lost existence of a powerful life in the origins of the province. It's not surprising then that we have to return to its deepness to try to reactivate it.
Facing the existence of an obsolete and underused market building occupying most of the meagre public space of the nearly nonexistent Domingo Gascon Square (even if provided with a commemorative statue), the decision taken is that of demolishing this old structure (a very inflexible and exclusive typology) and introducing a huge volume of youth leisure activities on the underground, to revitalize and to foster Teruel's activity, while the old public square existing before the market building was constructed is regained. The public space and leisure centre project takes the expression of a buried Godzilla (fictitious Japanese monster appearing as a mutant dinosaur): a telluric element of contemporary and pop expression.

BIZARRE COLUMNS

During the Modern Movement, columns are stripped of any prominence in relation to their distinguished past. Any significant ornamental reference is eliminated from the column and it is reduced to a question of functional syntaxis. The column, which even loses its name after the Corbuserian term "piloti", becomes relevant only in terms of its structural and structuring capacity, a role imposed by modernity through the open plan. This formal and semantic reduction is questioned by Robert Venturi in "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture" in 1966 and by Charles Jencks in "The Language of Postmodern Architecture" in 1977. For the latter, architecture must recover its semantic capacity as a language through the power of the metaphor. So, the column becomes the fundamental term bound to communicate those new messages that surpass, but at the same time include, the exhausted modernity. The hybridization and aesthetic complexity, the recovery and reinterpretation of history, the taste for the extravagant or the bizarre, the inclusion of the unspecialized public, the interest for the context or for the generation of new cultural references are some of those new messages for which the column becomes the fundamental means of communication based on a series of architectural strategies.

"The Free Style order, like the first Doric and Ionic order, or like most compound orders, are motivated by meaning. Newness is provoked by that willingness for meaning."[1](Jencks, 1982, p.110)

ENORME Studio is an architecture and design office based in Madrid and led by David Pérez, Carmelo Rodríguez and Rocío Pina. ENORME is best characterized by their radical approach to architecture, city and people. They design and build ARCHITECTURE PROJECTS based on industrial systems and typological innovation, as well as perform participation dynamics in the domain of city construction through their creative platform CIUDAD CREA CIUDAD and the creation of CITIZENSHIP BRAND IDENTITIES. Their aim is to foster alternative ways to examine urban issues and to motivate the creation of a proactive citizen culture. They design and apply TACTICAL URBANISM tools that transfer teamwork strategies and collective thinking dynamics into public and private space design and management. ENORME’s aim is to give the city back to citizens as an emotional, plural and relational space.

The ENORME Studio architects that Manifesta 12 is collaborating with on this project are Carmelo Rodríguez and Rocío Pina

OUTSIDE THE BOX

LETTERS TO THE MAJOR

Letters to the Mayor: Madrid

September 29th – October 9th, 2016

XII Semana de la Arquitectura

COAM

#LetterstotheMayor @storefrontnyc

Letters to the Mayor: Madrid presents a collection of letters written by more than 50 architects, bringing pressing issues and new ideas to the desk of Mayor Manuela Carmena.

Letters to the Mayor: Madrid takes place as part of the XIII Semana de la Arquitectura, and is the 11th edition of Letters to the Mayor, a project initiated by Storefront for Art and Architecture in 2014.

This project invites architects to write letters to their mayors, initiating a dialogue between those who represent a city and those that build it. International iterations, organized in partnership with local institutions and individuals, bring the project to cities and towns across the globe. Each of the iterations share three common elements: an exhibition of letters addressed to the mayor, a Mayoral Desk and Architect’s Table, and a wallpaper that reflects ideas and issues unique to each city. The desk and table, as well as the wallpaper, are designed by local architects, artists, and designers, and reflect upon the role of the architect in the construction of the future of the contemporary city.

Letters to the Mayor: Madrid is curated by Moneo Brock and Enorme Studio.

1st Prize Restricted Competition // June 2013

1st Phase Accomplished // Nov 2013 – Jun 2014

I AM RECYCLED consists on the refurbishment of an industrial building sector in Arrasate (Basque Country, Spain). The building, constructed in 1928, was a part of ASAM steel industry. Thanks to this renewal the structure will extend its life span to be used as a recycling center, reuse workshop and second hand proucts sale, 2.568 square meters managed by Grupo Emaús Bidasoa.

I AM RECYCLED outlines the importance to preserve the identity of the original reinforced concrete structure as well as its industrial preexistences. A series of low-cost strategies are developed as a way to make it possible that a new activity can be established, accompanied by the appearance of a new contemporary identity for the building.

STAIRWAY TO HITZAK

“There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold / and she’s buying a stairway to heaven When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for.”

MAD SKYLINE GAMES

2012-2013. “User’s Guide” Exhibition, Centro Centro, Madrid [Spain]

Turning Madrid Skyline into recreational-participatory facilities.
Skyline iconicity is most frequently used as an easily recognizable motif suitable to decorate t-shirts or souvenirs, a novelty to lure some unprepared tourists fed up with Cibeles and statues. John McHale was quite clear when he stated that millions of copies of Parthenon reproduced in small scale and sold all over the world were much more important than the original historical building in itself. It’s all just urban marketing, cities losing their minds trying to own the biggest one…

Madrid plays this game of urban identity definition through the image of very large buildings protruding above city skyline to be seen from far away. In spite of not being clearly recognizable from any outside location, Madrid not only shows off its traditional skyline, but also has increased it in recent years by the erection of for towers, a symbol of “the city that could have been better (but it wasn’t)”.

Prototype1: Madrid Tetuán. Sun - Shadow - Time - Temperature in public space.
As a matter of fact our increasing ability to have access to a higher level of information in real time has modified our way to do some daily things, such as the way in which we relate to each other or do the shopping.
There are many other questions of public concern that are paradoxically managed by specialized technicians, this practice becomes particularly significant when we are dealing with data and information related to design, evaluation and management of public spaces in our cities.
An increasing speculation with the Smart City concepts has sparked off hopeful expectations with the promise of collective participation in the processes of design of cities. These expectations are quite often accompanied by a certain sense of frustration as a result of the difficulties in technological expertise needed to reach a successful development of these tools, as well as the lack of an effective and visible impact on the landscape of urban environments, of a visualization of the effects produced by critical and collective actions and reflections that are presumed to derive from its performance.
Analogical Smart Cities proposes an analogical re-interpretation in real scale of digital tools that are often used to visualize information related to public spaces design and management in cities. This re-interpretation consists on the physical drawing of the information and data on the surface of the elements referred to. This action would be carried out by the citizens themselves.

The graphical design of an event turns into action of the proper event, in content of the event...
[It indexes: Nike's advertising that uses the own advertising format as expression and materialization of the own content and brand image]
We are expert neither in economy, nor in business management ... most of our projects is deficit (but there will be some reason for which we are here)... It is possible that there are explicable parts of our work from an optics near to the marketing (or connectable), detecting and developing tricks that we have been discovering brings over of topics as: how to enter on a market, how to generate favorable contexts, how to manage the ideas and production of a project, how to provide him with creative appreciations, how to report, to connect and to re-insert a project with the reality.

Transportable, industrial and low-cost…

How to build a work hangar with 15 High Cube Containers?

The work with containers is only often a piling up, organization and customization problem that produces a series of projects with a very diverse external appearance but with the same internal space features and always connecting with the intrinsic container geometry, its framework and limitations.

When I was a child, I had always dreamed about catching a mouse with a lifted for a stick cardboard box (In the same way that Coyotes tries to hunt Roadrunner)...

SUPERHATCH

Nov 2013. Lisboa. CLoser Closer Architecture Triennale
“SUPERHATCH” is a project developed by PKMN and curated by Ariadna Cantis inside the third Lisbon Architecture Triennale as associated project of Close, Closer

SUPERHATCH proposes an ANALOGICAL RE-INTERPRETATION in real scale of a digital graphic tool: Cad Hatch Patterns.
Hatch Patterns don’t have a scale though they’re used to represent the real materials that are used on public space design in cities. The re-interpretation process that we propose consists on the physical drawing with plastic tape of some of these hatch patterns superimposed to surface of a square in Lisbon. This square will be a very crowded place in the center of Lisbon: Praça “Igreja de Sao Domingos”.

Madrileño del año

September 2010. Madrid [Spain]

"During The White Night 2010 thousands of Madrilenians became Alberto Santander, Madrilenian of the Year, an anonymous citizen that turned into the protagonist image of the city for one night through the presence of thousands of doubles of himself, a masked crowd that changed Madrid's urban landscape".The idea of "turning" an anonymous and individual citizen into a protagonist that represents a whole city derives from some already tested formats such as people's choice awards (democracy?) and participative urban dynamics (whether they take place on the street using a mobile photo boot that travels over different areas of the city or by virtual means such as an open website), as well as contemporary social traumas such as the fifteen minutes of fame predicted by Andy Warhol or the adoration of imaginary characters (we come up with fictions about famous people that play the lead roles of the events in which we are mere spectators). The quest for the "Madrilenian of the Year" is not an attempt to generate a summary of identities, a partisan average, a standard size or a model (these are frequently the goals of most existing prestige brands), but to make an anecdotic citizen become the representative image of the identity of the city of Madrid. We are not looking for another fictitious image of superiority (whether it is an Olympic hand or a Cultural full moon) to represent us, but a real person with a concrete identity: Alberto Santander Martínez.

Cáceres crea Cáceres

October 2008. Cáceres [Spain]

Cáceres has a singular cultural heritage and a unique historic district which is never used by its citizens in an active way: they are bound to go to a big music concert or to a theatre play, because these are the kind of events which are supposed to take place in an urban setting that has renounced to use its space for any activity not suitable for touristic use, and whose buildings have been turned into museums and foundations.Cáceres creates Cáceres turned 2016 images of 2016 Caceres' citizens into a re-created artificial landscape, an urban intervention made up of images in different formats and scales: real scale figures populating the streets, a mega-citizen protecting the city and merchandising objects (badges, balloons, t-shirts …) that were given out during a participatory event of identity interchange that recovered the historic district of the city as a place were citizens can became actors and not only spectators.

AUGUSTA EMERITA

AUGUSTA EMERITA

Roman Recycled Style

Augusta Emerita was a Roman city founded in the year 25 a.C. to accommodate the licensed soldiers of the legions X Gemina and V Alaudade. Now that city is Mérida. A new edition of the Ibero-American Social Work Congress was held in the city last October.

ENORME Studio we have designed the scenography of the Congress with a Roman Recyclable style. All the counters are reinterpretations of the altars where blood sacrifices were made, the stands of the sponsors small fronts of classical temples and the rest area a seat columns reproducing 1/1 scale of the columns of its hexastyle portico, with base of foam rubber imitating granite and shaft from cardboard tubes.

All the scenography was made with MDF wood planks of 19mm thickness and 60mm diameter cardboard tubes that will be recycled in the workshop "Fabrikando, Laboratory of experimental manufacturing in Self-construction and Reuse" that will be held during the month of November in the facilities of LaFábrika detodalavida, endorsed by the GRRR platform (Management for the Reuse and Redistribution of Resources).

ARACHI Urban Alebrije from Santa Cecilia / Taller del Desierto [Eng] The ISAD, Institute of Architecture and Design of Chihuahua, organizes each summer the workshop called “Taller del Desierto”. This year they proposed to us, ENORME Studio to direct together with the local architects Juan Castillo and Miguel Heredia a new edition of the workshop, destined to build a small urban infrastructure in the Santa Cecilia neighborhood in Chihuahua. In a small park, which is the heart of the colony, several communities and associations come together with different interests but with the same needs. On the one hand, a group of mothers, children and girls from Umbral Foundation try to become Mariachis, following in the footsteps of the founders of the colony. On the other, the parishioners continue to build themselves the church of Santa Cecilia, still unfinished but already in use. The association of Elders of the colony has become the caretakers of the park and they need an outdoor space ...

STAIRWAY TO HITZAK

— view —

“There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold / and she’s buying a stairway to heaven When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for.”

HOME BACK HOME Ana Mombiedro

Through this Home Back Home workshop, sponsored by IKEA, we have worked on the restructuring of this domestic space in order to turn it into a sleeping and study room; the challenge was not to compromise the social and celebratory nature of the main communal area in the house. Taking advantage of IKEA sponsoring we've hacked some of its classical pieces of furniture, such as the BEKVAM stool, in order to organize a working area that can be isolated from the rest of the living area. There's also a bed that appears and hides in order to meet circumstantial needs, small grandstands to store more than forty pairs of shoes, clothes, books.... this key piece is also the extension of the public space of the house when the celebration of parties and family meetings requires it.
